Abstract
1,237,735. Polymerizing vinyl esters. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 23 Sept., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967], No. 45006/68. Heading C3P. Vinyl esters are polymerized or copolymerized in aqueous suspension with a free radical catalyst in the presence, added before polymerization begins, of (a) 3-25% wt. (based on the aqueous solution before addition of monomer) of a polyvinyl alcohol (or derivative) with a residual acetyl content of 0À5-20% wt. and (b) 0À3-20% wt. based on (a) of a polyvinyl alcohol with a residual acetyl content of 20- 32% wt. and obtained by saponification of a polyvinyl acetate having a K-value of 10-70. In the examples, vinyl acetate is polymerized using ammonium persulphate. Other emulsifiers may be present.
