Abstract

Grafted acrylonitrile polymers are obtained by polymerizing acrylonitrile in aqueous medium alone or in the presence of not greater than 15 per cent of other copolymerizable materials, together with a water-soluble high molecular weight organic substance containing the C-H bond, having a molecular weight greater than 1000, so that the amount of high molecular weight substance in the grafted acrylonitrile polymer formed is between 5 and 40 per cent, then separating the polymer from the aqueous phase, the aqueous phase so separated, with, if desired, any aqueous washings of the polymer, being used again in polymerization. Water-soluble high molecular weight substances specified are polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl sulphonate, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, polymethacrylamide, polyethylene oxide, starch, cellulose methyl ether, and gelatin. Copolymerizable monomers specified are vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, e.g. methyl methacrylate, styrene, isobutylene, and 2-vinyl pyridine. Polymerization may be carried out in the presence of catalysts such as azo-di-isobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and persulphates, or a reduction activation pair such as ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite. The aqueous medium may also contain sodium sulphate in order to obtain an p easily filterable product, ethyl alcohol, and dilute sulphuric acid. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously, and yields polymers from which fibres may be formed. Specification 715,194 is referred to.
