Abstract

Shaped articles, such as films and filaments, are made by extruding into a coagulating bath a solution of a grafted polymer obtained by polymerizing acrylonitrile, alone or in the presence of small amounts of copolymerizable material, with more than 60 per cent, based on the weight of the shaped article, of a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol. Copolymerizable monomers specified are vinyl acetate, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl chloride, styrene, isobutylene, and 2-vinyl pyridine. Polymerization may be carried out either batchwise or continuously in the presence of catalysts such as azo-diisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, or a persulphate, or a redox system such as a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite. The polymerization medium may also contain sodium sulphate in order to obtain an easily filterable product, and sulphuric acid to produce an acid pH. The polymer solution is preferably extruded into a saline bath, e.g. saturated aqueous solutions of sodium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium sulphate, or sodium chloride; filaments thus produced may be stretched and then insolubilized by treatment with aqueous formaldehyde at a pH of less than 3.
