Abstract
1307890 Staged emulsion polymerization of vinyl esters WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 19 May 1970 [19 May 1969] 24221/70 Heading C3P A process for making highly viscous aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers with a particle size of 0À03 to 2 Á, comprises free radical emulsion polymerization at 10 to 100‹ C. of one or more vinyl esters of straight-chain or branched carboxylic acids of 2 to 18 carbon atoms and optionally one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an amount of up to 60% by wt. based on the total monomer(s), in the presence as emulsifier of one or more polyalkylene oxides or polyalkylene oxide derivatives with 5 to 50 alkylene oxide units per molecule, and optionally one or more anionic emulsifiers, in which process 5 to 25% by weight of the monomer(s) are polymerized in the presence of the emulsifier(s) up to at least 70% conversion, and then the remaining monomer(s) and a mixture of (a) 0À1 to 2% by weight of acrylic, methacrylic or crotonic acid and (b) 0À1 to 2% by weight of an amide of one of the above acids, both based on the weight of the final copolymer dispersion, are added continuously, optionally with additional initiator, such that the monomer concentration does not exceed 25% by weight based on the reaction mixture. Vinyl esters specified are vinyl acetate, -propionate, -butyrate, -octoate, -2-ethyl hexoate, -laurate, -stearate, the vinyl ester of "Versatic" (Regd. Trade Mark) acid, isononane carboxylic acid and isotridecane carboxylic aicd. Other ethylenically unsaturated monomers specified are vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene choride, ethylene, propylene, iso-butene, but-2-ene, styrene, acrylonitrile, or an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or a diester of fumaic, maleic or itaconic acid, with a mono- or dihydroxy-alcohol containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms. Emulsifiers specified are a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, and alkyl phenol, fatty alcohol, carboxylic acid, amide or primary or secondary amine derivatives of common polyalkylene oxides. Up to 1% by weight, based on the vinyl ester copolymer dispersion, of an alkali metal salt of vinyl sulphonic acid, may be copolymerized. In the examples vinyl esters and mixtures of vinyl esters, with or without comonomers all selected from those specified above, are emulsion copolymerized in the two stage manner, with an initiator of potassium persulphate. In Example 5, the initiator system is potassium persulphate as oxidizing agent, and a palladium sol/gaseous hydrogen system as reducing agent. pH's of the emulsions are adjusted with ammonia, and their compatibility with standard fillers/pigments, is tested.
