Abstract
A stable latex of a copolymer of an unsaturated polyester and a vinyl or vinylidene monomer is prepared by (1) dissolving an unsaturated polyester having an average molecular weight of 300 to 4000 and 2.5 to 5.0 butene dioate groups per molecule and derived from maleic acid, fumaric acid, and/or maleic anhydride in a vinyl monomer containing at least one <FORM:1121198/C3/1> group (or mixture of such monomers), to form a solution containing 5 to 75% by weight of unsaturated polyester, (2) emulsifying this solution in water to form an oil-in-water emulsion, and (3) copolymerizing the monomer with the unsaturated polyester in the emulsion in the presence of a free radical initiator for emulsion polymerization, to form the latex. The polyester may be sulphonated by reaction with an alkali metal or ammonium salt of sulphurous acid before being dissolved in the vinyl monomer. In the Examples: (1) a polyester is prepared from pelargonic acid, fumaric acid, adipic acid and neopentyl glycol, (2) the polyester of (1) is dissolved in vinyl acetate, emulsified in the presence of water, a condensate of propylene oxide, propylene glycol and ethylene oxide, an alkali metal salt of a dialkyl sulphosuccinic acid and potassium persulphate and copolymerized; (3) the polyester of (1) is sulphonated with sodium bisulphite, dissolved in vinyl acetate, mixed with water and potassium persulphate and emulsified, the polyester acting as a self-emulsifier, and copolymerized; (4) a polyester prepared from diethylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride is used and Example (2) followed; (5) the polyester of (4) is used with styrene, water sodium hydroxide and potassium persulphate; (6) the polyester of (4) is used with ethyl acrylate, the condensate and salt of (2), potassium persulphate and water.
