Abstract

Vinyl monomers are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and a polymer seed latex containing particles of a predetermined size and concentration and which has been mixed with an emulsifier or protective colloid in such an amount that all of the emulsifier is bound physically to the surfaces of the polymer particles in the seed latex, i.e. there is no free emulsifier present during the polymerization. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously and the latex, and aqueous solution of the catalyst may be added portionwise or continuously. The monomer exemplified is vinyl chloride and the latex seed polymer used polyvinyl chloride. The emulsifier exemplified is a mixture of sodium laurate and sodium hydroxide. The polymer made by the process may be recovered by spray-drying and subsequently compounded with dioctyl phthalate to give a paste. Specifications 355,202 and 627,265 are referred to.
