Abstract

A process for the production of polymers of vinyl acetate comprises subjecting vinyl acetate, or a mixture of vinyl acetate with another monomer copolymerizable therewith containing at least 50% by weight of vinyl acetate, to aqueous emulsion polymerization in the presence, as stabilizer for the emulsion, of an ammonium or alkali metal salt of the condensation product of a long chain acid halide containing at least 12 carbon atoms and an unsubstituted or N-substituted aminoalkyl sulphonic acid, the total amount of stabilizer and other water-soluble solids being at most 3% based on the total weight of monomer. Specified acid halides are lauryl, palmityl, stearyl and oleyl chlorides. The preferred aminoalkyl sulphonic acids are taurine and N-methyl taurine. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. potassium persulphate, and redox systems, e.g. hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulphate, optionally in the presence of buffers, e.g. sodium bicarbonate. The monomer may be added continuously or incrementally throughout the polymerization. Examples describe the use of the sodium salt of N-oleyl-N-methyl taurine in the polymerization of (I to III) vinyl acetate and (IV) in the copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate. The products may be used in paints, adhesives and textile sizes, and examples describe paints comprising titanium dioxide and (I) polyvinyl acetate and dibutylphthalate and (IV) a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate.
