Abstract
Moulded products are made from mixtures of (a) copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate containing at least 75 per cent of vinyl chloride, and (b) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid esters, such as the methyl esters, and/or amides, alone or together with other polymerizable compounds such as styrene, by shaping the mixture, e.g. into films, granules, cords or ribbons, at a moderately increased temperature such as 40 DEG C. in the absence of accelerating agents, and then polymerizing by the addition of accelerating agents such as benzoyl peroxide and redox and metal redox systems, such as a mixture of a peroxide with a tertiary amine, a sulphinic acid, or ferric stearate. Also present in the polymerizable mixture may be a polymerization inhibitor such as hydroquinone, dyestuffs and/or plasticizers. Polymerization may be carried out by sprinkling accelerator on to the polymerizable mass, or by painting a solution of accelerator on to the walls of a mould in which polymerization is to be effected, followed by the application of heat or high frequency action. The process may be applied to the manufacture of artificial teeth. Specification 540,383 is referred to.
