Abstract

Block or graft polymers are prepared by introducing nitric (-O-NO2) or nitrous (-O-NO) groups into a polymer which is then heated together with one or more compounds polymerizable in the presence of free radicals. Polymers specified are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutenes, polypentenes, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetals, polystyrene, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers and polymers of conjugated dienes. Polymerizable compounds specified are styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, vinyl chloride and butadiene. Processes are described for introducing nitric or nitrous groups into polymers. Nitric groups may be introduced by the following methods: (1) by treating the polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene, with nitrogen pentoxide or a mixture of reactants which produces nitrogen pentoxide, e.g. nitric acid and phosphorus pentoxide, (2) by treating a chlorine containing polymer with aqueous silver nitrate, this reaction being facilitated by first treating the polymer with caustic soda and then reacting with bromine to introduce bromine atoms into the polymer chain, and (3) by treating a polymer containing ester groups with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, this reaction being facilitated by the partial hydrolysis of the ester groups, as in the case of a vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, by treatment with hydrochloric acid. Nitrous groups may be introduced into polymers containing hydroxyl groups, e.g. a hydrolysed vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, by treatment in an inert solvent with a mixture of an alkali nitrite and a strong acid.
