Abstract

Substd. phenyl acetic acids (I) prepn. comprises reacting a substd. styrene (II) with a mixt. of sulphur and morpholine (where R1 = H or CH3; R2 = 1-6C alkyl, 2-5C alkenyl, 2-6C alkoxy, 2-5C alkythio, or 3-5C alkenyloxy, all of these being straight chain or branched, 3-7C cycloalkyl, phenyl or phenyl oxy). The products are antiinflammatories, antipyretics, and analgesics. The process is easy to carry out and gives good yields. The reaction gives an amide initially, and this is then hydrolysed, preferably in situ. In an example 160g p-isobutyl styrene was treated with 60g sulphur and 275ml morpholine, and the prod. treated with HCl/glacial acetic acid, to give (I; R1 = H; R2 = p-isobutyl) mpt 85.5-87.5 degrees C.
