Abstract

The solubility at ambient temperatures of N,N-dimethylformamide-soluble acrylonitrile polymers, containing at least 85 per cent. acrylonitrile and free from hydroxyl groups, is reduced by submitting the polymer in finely divided state to a non-hydrolyzing treatment with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, any excess formaldehyde being removed after the separation of the polymer from the reaction medium. Specified polymers are polyacrylonitrile and a copolymer of acrylonitrile with 5 per cent. of vinyl dimethylaminoethyl ether. The treatment is preferably carried out at a temperature between 10 DEG and 150 DEG C. for a period between half and 24 hours. The aqueous formaldehyde solution may be acid, neutral or alkaline in reaction, and may contain a bleaching agent, such as sodium chlorite.
