Abstract
Dextran of molecular weight suitable for intravenous injection is produced by heating an aqueous acidic solution of higher molecular weight dextran containing 2.5 to 33 1/3 per cent by volume of water present of a non-solvent for the dextran consisting of a water-miscible aliphatic alcohol or ketone, or dioxane, at the boiing point of the water non-solvent mixture. The reaction mixture may also contain a reducing agent, preferably ascorbic acid. The high molecular weight dextran used as starting material is synthezized from sucrose by dextran sucrase in the presence or absence of bacteria. Examples describe the degradation of high molecular weight dextran using sulphuric or hydrochloric acid in the presence of isopropanol, ethanol, methanol, dioxane and acetone.
