Abstract

Raney nickel catalysts and Raney cobalt catalysts are regenerated by treatment with a 0.5 to 5N solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in water and/or an alcohol miscible with water, in the presence of hydrogen. The treatment is carried out, preferably at 40 DEG to 150 DEG C., by suspending the catalyst in the solution and passing in hydrogen or by generating hydrogen in the suspension by adding a metal, such as aluminium, which reacts with the hydroxide. The alcohol may be methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, or a mono-alkyl ether of glycerol or ethylene glycol. Examples are given.
