334,919. Groves, W. W., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 11, 1929. Divided on and addition to 334,878. Thioindigo series.-The stable reduction compounds of 4: 4<1>-dimethyl-6 : 6<1>-dihalogenthioindigos described in the parent Specification are made by treating the dyestuffs with alkali and a reducing agent, other than a hydrosulphide, and causing an acid, for instance carbonic acid or sulphurous acid, to act on the solution thus obtained. The reduction may be facilitated by the addition of an alcohol to the reaction mixture. In an example, 4: 41-dimethyl-6: 6<1>-dichlorthioindigo is reduced with hydrosulphite and caustic soda in the presence of alcohol and water; carbon dioxide is then passed through the mixture until it is no longer alkaline to phenolphthalein.
