Abstract
Ethionic acid, carbyl sulphate, homologues or the hydroaromatic analogues thereof are obtained by causing sulphur trioxide, chlorosulphonic acid or a mixture thereof to react upon a hydroaromatic alcohol or upon an aliphatic alcohol containing at most seven carbon atoms, particularly ethyl alcohol, in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide. The corresponding unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as are contained in gases obtained by cracking, may replace the aliphatic or hydroaromatic alcohols. The products may be saponified to give isethionic acid, its homologues or hydroaromatic analogues. In examples (1) ethyl alcohol is treated with a solution of sulphur trioxide in liquid sulphur dioxide to obtain carbyl sulphate; (2) a solution of ethyl alcohol in liquid sulphur dioxide is treated with a solution of sulphur trioxide in sulphur dioxide to obtain ethionic acid; (3) ethylene is led into a solution of sulphur trioxide in liquid sulphur dioxide to obtain carbyl sulphate; (4) a solution of n-butyl alcohol in liquid sulphur dioxide is treated with a solution of sulphur trioxide and chlorosulphonic acid in liquid sulphur dioxide to obtain the homologue of carbyl sulphate derived from butyl alcohol; (5) cyclohexene or cyclohexanol is allowed to run into a solution of sulphur trioxide in liquid sulphur dioxide to obtain cyclohexanol sulphuric acid. Specification 346,945 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the treatment of aliphatic alcohols in general. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
