Abstract

Sulpho acids having emulsifying, foaming and saponaceous properties are prepared by treating with sulphonating agents the sulphones or sulphoxides obtained by oxidizing nonaromatic organic sulphides containing an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue having at least eight carbon atoms and one or more double bond or hydroxy group. In examples: (1) dodecyl (b :g -dihydroxypropyl) sulphide, obtained from dodecyl mercaptan and glycerolchlorhydrin, or the corresponding decyl, tetradecyl or hexadecyl sulphide is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid and the resulting sulphone sulphonated in carbon tetrachloride with chlorsulphonic acid; a similar product is obtained by sulphonating sulphones containing the b -hydroxyethyl group instead of the b :g -dihydroxypropyl group: (2) a mixture of mercaptans obtained from glycerin chlorhydrin and aliphatic mercaptans containing 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 carbon atoms is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and sulphonated with sulphuric acid; an aqueous solution of the product may be used as a hair wash: (3) a mixture of b -hydroxyethylnaphthenylsulphides, obtained from ethylenechlorhydrin and the sodium compound of naphthenemercaptans, is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and then sulphonated: (4) oleicethylsulphide, obtained from ethylmercaptan and an inorganic ester of oleic alcohol, is oxidized and then sulphonated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the oxidation and sulphonation of higher organic sulphides containing aryl groups. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sulpho acids having emulsifying properties are prepared by treating with sulphonating agents the sulphones or sulphoxides obtained by oxidizing non-aromatic organic sulphides containing an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue having at least eight carbon atoms and one or more double bond or hydroxy group. In examples: (1) dodecyl (b : g -dihydroxypropyl) sulphide, or the corresponding decyl, tetradecyl or hexadecyl sulphide is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid and the resulting sulphone sulphonated in carbon tetrachloride with chlorsulphonic acid; a similar product is obtained by sulphonating sulphones containing the b -hydroxyethyl group instead of the b : g -dihydroxypropyl group: (2) a mixture of mercaptans obtained from glycerin chlorhydrin and aliphatic mercaptans containing 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 carbon atoms is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and sulphonated with sulphuric acid; (3) a mixture of b -hydroxyethyl-naphthenyl sulphides. is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and then sulphonated: (4) oleicethylsulphide is oxidized and then sulphonated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the oxidation and sulphonation of higher organic sulphides containing aryl groups. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
