Abstract
Surface-active mixtures of high foaming capacity are obtained by forming a mixture comprising (a) a condensate of an alkyl-phenol or -cresol, preferably having 7-9 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, with 8-10, preferably 8 or 9, ethylene oxide units, and (b) a neutralized or unneutralized sulphate of (a), the molecular ratio of (a) to (b) being 95:5 to 60:40, but preferably at least 75:25. The composition may be obtained directly by partial sulphation of a condensate as in (a) above, or indirectly after preparing each component separately. Other surface-active agents, alkali-metal pyro- and poly-phosphates, silicates, carbonates, sulphates, borates, percarbonates, persulphates, perborates, sodium carboxymethylcellulose or other soluble cellulose or starch derivatives, optical bleach and foam forming and stabilizing substances may also be incorporated. Component (b) may be present as the alkali metal, ammonium, or organic base salt.ALSO:Surface-active mixtures comprising (a) a condensate of an alkyl-phenol or -cresol, preferably having 7-9 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, with 8-10, preferably 8 or 9 ethylene oxide units, and (b) a neutralized or unneutralized sulphate of (a), the molecular ratio of (a) to (b) being 95 : 5 to 60 : 40, but preferably at least 75 : 25, are prepared either directly by only partially sulphating a condensate (a), or indirectly by completely sulphating a condensate (a) and then mixing subsequently with more unsulphated condensate, the sulphation being performed preferably with chlorsulphonic acid or oleum at 0-10 DEG C. using a 1.1 molar ratio of acid to condensate in the former case, and a ratio of at least 1 in the latter case. Diluents such as carbon tetrachloride, saturated hydrocarbons or ether may be used. Sulphur trioxide, suitably at 0 DEG C. in inert solvents such as carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethane, acetyl chloride, sulphur dioxide, b -chlorethyl ether, pyridine or dioxane, pyrosulphate, or sulphuric acid may also be used as sulphating agents. The sulphation product may then be neutralized with alkali metal hydroxide, ammonia or organic bases such as the ethanolamines while the temperature is kept at 30-60 DEG C.
