Abstract
Alkyl or aryl sulphonyl fluorides are obtained by reacting in aqueous solution an alkyl or aryl sulphonyl chloride R SO2 Cl where R is an aryl group or an alkyl group preferably containing not more than eight carbon atoms with an inorganic bifluoride. Sodium, potassium and ammonium are preferred bifluorides and methyl sulphonyl chloride the preferred sulphochloride. In examples: (1) pure and (2) crude methyl sulphonyl chloride is reacted with aqueous potassium bifluoride to give methyl sulphonyl fluoride; in (3) benzene sulphonyl chloride is refluxed with aqueous potassium bifluoride to give benzene sulphonyl fluoride; and in (4) o-toluene sulphonyl chloride is refluxed with aqueous ammonium bifluoride to give o-toluene sulphonyl fluoride.
