Abstract
Pivalic acid is prepared by reacting isobutanol with formic acid in the presence of a substantially anhydrous strong acid catalyst. Sulphuric and hydrofluoric acids or a mixture of boron trifluoride with sulphuric acid are used and the formic acid and isobutanol are used in molar ratios of 2:1 to 1:2, preferably equimolar. The reactant mixture is added to the catalyst preferably over a period, with mixing and at a temperature between -10 DEG C. and 110 DEG C. and at a pressure of 15 lbs./sq. in. above atmospheric, and the acid is extracted and purified. The acid may be an intermediate in the preparation of 1:11-dineopentyl-ferrocene. Specification 819,108 is referred to.
