Abstract

A product consisting substantially of methylene -bis-iminodiacetonitrile is obtained by reacting hexamethylene tetramine or the equivalent amounts of formaldehyde and ammonia with one mole of hydrocyanic acid per mole of formaldehyde or formaldehyde equivalent in the hexamethylene tetramine, in the presence of a solvent (e.g. water or methanol), and subsequently acidifying the reaction mixture with a strong mineral acid (e.g. HCl, H2SO4 or HClO4) using 1.2 to 2.26 equivalents of acid per mole of liberated ammonia. The reaction with the hydrocyanic acid is preferably effected at from -10 DEG to +20 DEG C.
