Abstract

Melamine is made by reacting a cyanuric halide with 100-500 per cent of its weight of anhydrous ammonia above 100 DEG C. at a pressure greater than 500 p.s.i. Alternatively, the cyanuric halide may be reacted at atmospheric temperature to give a monohalo-diamino-triazine, and the reaction completed with more ammonia above 100 DEG C. The halide may be chloride, bromide or a mixture of the two. An organic solvent such as ether may be used if desired. The excess ammonia may be recovered and recycled, the ammonium halide removed by filtration and washing with water leaving melamine. Examples are given of the process. Specification 502,148 is referred to.ALSO:Cyanuric bromide is obtained by the bromination of hydrocyanic acid or sodium cyanide to give cyanogen bromide which is then polymerised at a low temperature with aluminium bromide. Use of aluminium chloride yields a product containing some cyanuric chloride. Specification 502,148, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
