Abstract

Anhydrous hydrazine is prepared by dissociating an anhydrous phthalyl hydrazide salt of hydrazine by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure, and collecting the hydrazine thus liberated. The hydrazine salt of phthalyl hydrazide may be replaced by adding ethyl alcohol to an aqueous solution of the phthalyl hydrazide in excess hydrazine hydrate and drying the resultant precipitate, or by reacting phthalimide with an excess of hydrazine hydrate in boiling alcohol. In an example, the hydrazine salt of phthalyl hydrazide prepared by either of the above methods is distilled and anhydrous hydrazine is collected in a cooled receiver.ALSO:The hydrazine salt of phthalyl hydrazide is prepared by adding ethyl alcohol to an aqueous solution of phthalyl hydrazide in excess hydrazine hydrate or by reacting phthalimide with excess hydrazine hydrate in boiling ethyl alcohol.
