Abstract

Cyanohydrins are prepared in a continuous manner by reacting aliphatic carbonyl compounds with hydrocyanic acid in the presence of a catalyst having an alkaline reaction, wherein the carbonyl compounds and the hydrocyanic acid are continuously introduced into a reaction unit containing the catalyst and a diluent in 10- to 400-fold excess of the starting substances and are conducted in a cycle, temperatures of 5 DEG C. to 20 DEG C. and a pH of 6 to 8 being maintained, the resulting reaction mixture being continuously drawn off and conducted into a sojourn zone maintained at 0 DEG C. to 10 DEG C. where it remains until the reaction is complete. Diluents may be water, hydrocarbons or the cyanohydrin obtained as a reaction product. Carbonyl compounds exemplified are acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde and acetone, yielding lactic nitrile, crotonaldehyde cyanohydrin and acetone cyanohydrin, respectively, as final products.
