Abstract

Lactams are prepared by reacting at a high temperature an o -halogen-fatty acid containing at least 4 carbon atoms with an excess of concentrated aqueous ammonia, and the lactam formed is isolated by extraction with a solvent and subsequent distillation. The reaction is preferably conducted within the temperature range 200-350 DEG C. and preferably in a continuous manner by passing a mixture of the reactants through a reaction zone brought to the necessary reaction temperature, the period of residence in said zone being such that the reaction goes practically to completion. Specified starting materials are g -halogen-butyric, d -halogen-valeric or e -halogen-caproic acids. The examples describe the preparation of d -valerolactam and pyrrolidone-(2).
