Abstract
Methacrylic acid amide sulphate is obtained by reacting acetone cyanohydrin with sulphuric acid using equimolecular quantities of acetone cyanohydrin and concentrated sulphuric acid (as defined below) or an excess of concentrated sulphuric acid while heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of from 80 to 140 DEG C., quickly cooling the reaction mixture to below 60 DEG C., immediately adding a further quantity of acetone cyanohydrin and/or concentrated sulphuric acid to the mixture at below 60 DEG C. such that the overall molecular ratio of acetone cyanohydrin to sulphuric acid in the final mixture is from 1:1 to 1:1.5 followed by the further heating of the resulting mixture to from 80 to 140 DEG C. and finally cooling the mixture. The concentrated sulphuric acid used is defined as 100% sulphuric acid. The acetone cyanohydrin and/or the concentrated sulphuric acid can be added to the quenched or chilled mixture either separately or in the form of a prepared liquid mixture and this mixture can be added all at once or in two or more portions. The process can be carried out continuously, e.g. by adding the acetone cyanohydrin and/or the sulphuric acid continuously to a mixture of acetone cyanohydrin and excess sulphuric acid which has been heated to from 80 to 140 DEG C., preferably 100 DEG to 110 DEG C., and then quickly cooled to below 60 DEG C. The continuous process can be carried out on the principle of a heating pump, if necessary with the assistance of a delivery pump and suitable apparatus is illustrated in a drawing (not shown) The product may be reacted with an alcohol, ammonia, or water to obtain a methacrylate, methoacrylic acid amide or free methacrylic acid respectively.
