Abstract

Solid ammonium nitrate is obtained by reacting highly concentrated nitric acid and ammonia, solid ammonium nitrate being introduced before the reaction, whereby the temperature rise due to the reaction heat is reduced. External cooling of the reaction vessel may also be provided. Ammonia gas may be absorbed in ammonium nitrate to produce "Divers' liquid" which reacts with concentrated nitric acid or ammonia gas may be brought into contact with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and solid ammonium nitrate. A cylindrical vessel of aluminium may be used and stirring may take place. According to one modification, solid ammonium nitrate and concentrated nitric acid are fed continuously to one end of a closed elongated water-cooled trough provided with a stirring worm or stirring arms, ammonia gas being introduced in counter current at the other end.
