Abstract

Cyanogen halides such as cyanogen chloride are obtained by halogenating hydrocyanic acid at an elevated pressure, say from 5 to 50 lbs. per square inch. An aqueous solution of hydrocyanic acid is placed in a pressure vessel provided with an agitator, cooling coils, a sampling device and charging and discharging connections. Less than the theoretical quantity of halogen is admitted; when the reaction is complete, the cyanogen halide is withdrawn. When chlorine is employed a pressure of 20-30 lbs. per square inch is maintained, the temperature being kept below 30 DEG C. The use of bromine is also referred to.
