Abstract
1.1-Dichlorethane is made by treating vinyl chloride with hydrogen chloride below 35 DEG C. in a suspension or solution of aluminium chloride in a chlorinated hydrocarbon. 1.1-Dichlorethane is mixed with aluminium chloride and vinyl chloride with cooling. Hydrogen chloride is led in at 0 DEG C. while stirring. Fresh vinyl chloride is added and hydrogen chloride led in, and the process repeated several times. Aluminium chloride is removed with water and any vinyl chloride separated by fractional distillation. The mixture of vinyl chloride and excess hydrogen chloride prepared from acetylene and hydrogen chloride in the presence of mercuric chloride may be used and led into cooled dichlorethane containing aluminium chloride or passed up a tower in counter-current thereto. U.S.A. Specification 1,900,276 is referred to.
