Abstract

Alkyl halides are made in a continuous process by reacting a hydrogen halide with an alcohol containing less than four carbon atoms in presence of a catalyst comprising a bismuth halide at a temperature above the boiling-point of the alcohol. The catalyst may be bismuth chloride or bromide or, initially, bisanth oxychloride and may be used fused, or in solution containing, for example, 70--90 per cent of bismuth halide, or upon a carrier such as active alumina, alundum or asbestos. Examples describe the production of methyl, ethyl and isopropyl chlorides. In one case, a mixture of ethyl alcohol and sulphuric acid is added to a mixture of sodium bisulphate, sulphuric acid, water, and rock salt and the vapours evolved are treated with the bismuth chloride catalyst.
