Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for the manufacture of a 1-alkyne by the continuous treatment of a 1,2 dihaloalkane or a 1- or 2-mono-haloalkene in a boiling solution of an alkali metal alkoxide of an alcohol boiling above 100 DEG C. is modified by maintaining the solution throughout the reaction at least 50 per cent saturated with the alkali metal alkoxide, whilst ensuring that the amount of alkali metal halide present in the solution is never in excess of the amount chemically equivalent to that quantity of alkali metal alkoxide which would 50 per cent saturate the solution. The process may be carried out in a continuous manner or as a batch process. In a preferred process, 6 Kgs. of ethoxyethoxyethanol was heated to 170 DEG C. and then caustic soda added until 56 per cent saturation was reached. 1.13 Kgs. of dichloropropane was then fed to the vessl over 5 1/2 hours during which time sodium chloride was continuously filtered off from the solvent and caustic soda added, the caustic soda content rose to 72 per cent saturation. 256 grams of propyne and 7 grams of allene were formed.
