Abstract
Titanium tetraiodide and by-product hydrogen chloride are prepared by treating liquid titanium tetrachloride with hydrogen iodide, the amount of hydrogen iodide being insufficient to utilize the whole of the titanium tetrachloride employed. The hydrogen iodide may be passed into liquid titanium tetrachloride such that the ratio of iodide to titanium does not reach 4, and preferably does not reach 3, or the hydrogen iodide and titanium tetrachloride may be added to a bath of titanium tetrachloride in mol. ratio of 4 : 1, or the titanium tetrachloride is passed downward in countercurrent to hydrogen iodide. The reaction temperature is preferably maintained between 10 DEG and 40 DEG C. and especially between 20 DEG and 30 DEG C. The titanium tetraiodide product may be separated by crystallization or by fractional distillation.
