Abstract

Alkyl aluminium chlorides may be made by reacting powdered metallic aluminium with an alkyl chloride containing less than 5 carbon atoms by introducing the vapour of the alkyl chloride into a liquid reaction medium containing the powdered aluminium and titanium tetrachloride. The latter is preferably present in amount from 0.2 to 1.5% based on the weight of aluminium. When preparing a sesquichloride it is preferred that the sesquichloride it is desired to produce should be used as reaction medium. The reaction is preferably conducted between 92 and 99 DEG C.
