Abstract
Tetraethyl-lead is prepared by reacting an alloy of lead with ethyl chloride at an elevated temperature characterized by introducing a molten sodium-lead alloy into a reaction zone containing liquid ethyl chloride. The alloy may be continuously sprayed or extruded in particle form into the ethyl chloride, and the reaction zone is maintained at reaction temperature or is maintained at a temperature below reaction temperature, the mixture then being heated to reaction temperature. The preferred particle size is below 4 mesh per linear inch, e.g., between 8 and 300 mesh per linear inch. The reaction temperature may be maintained between 40 DEG C. and 100 DEG C., the pressure being maintained at a value sufficient to keep the ethyl chloride in the liquid phase at the reaction temperature. An excess of ethyl chloride is preferably employed in the reaction. The ratio of ethyl chloride to lead may be between 0.5 to 1 and 6.25 to 1 by weight. The residence time of the lead in the reaction zone may vary from 3 to 30 minutes. Suitable lead alloys referred to are of the formulae NaPb, Na2Pb and Na3Pb4. Two examples are given.
