Abstract
One or more silanes of the formula RmSiX4-m are reacted with one or more silanes of the formula R1nSiHxY4-n-x, where R and R1\h are alkyl or aryl groups, X and Y are halogens other than fluorine, m is 1 to 4, n is 0 to 3 and x is 0 or 1, in the presence of an organoaluminium complex of the formula MX1R11AlY12 where M is an alkali metal, R11 is methyl or ethyl and X1 and Y1 are halogens other than fluorine. Examples of starting materials are MeSiCl3, Me3SiCl, Me4Si, Et3SiCl, Et4Si, Ph3SiCl, Ph4Si, SiCl4, PhSiCl3 and Ph2SiCl2. The preferred complex is that of methyl aluminium dichloride with sodium chloride; others mentioned are methyl or ethyl aluminium dichloride or dibromide with sodium, lithium, or potassium chloride or bromide. They may be used in amounts up to about 10% by weight of the silanes. Temperatures are generally 250 DEG to 450 DEG C. and pressures are up to 200 atmospheres. Examples are given.
