Abstract
In the preparation of lead tetra-alkyls by interaction of lead mono-sodium alloy with alkyl chloride, the alkyl chloride is first added in only small quantity so as to initiate the reaction, as indicated by a falling pressure and rising temperature, whereupon the remaining alkyl chloride is added as quickly as possible consistent with the avoidance of excessive development of heat. For the production of lead tetra-ethyl, an autoclave fitted with water jackets and stirring mechanism is charged with the alloy and after warming to 35--50 DEG C., a small amount of ethyl chloride is added. When the pressure falls with rising temperature, the bulk of the ethyl chloride is gradually added while cooling the autoclave. The reaction is completed, after all ethyl chloride has been added, by warming the autoclave again. The addition of the bulk of the ethyl chloride may, if desired, be interrupted when about half has been added, the remainder being added after a period of cooling. In the same way lead tetra-methyl and lead tetra-propyl may be prepared. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 214,221, [Class 2 (iii)].
