Abstract

Ethyl p-N-n-butylaminobenzoate is obtained either (a) by n-butylating ethyl p-amino-benzoate with an n-butyl halide in the presence of an acid acceptor such as sodium or potassium carbonate and preferably of a finely-divided metal, e.g. copper or zinc, or (b) by condensing ethyl p-aminobenzoate with n-butyraldehyde and reducing the Schiff's base so formed. Examples relate to (1) heating a mixture of n-butyl bromide, ethyl p-aminobenzoate, anhydrous sodium carbonate, and copper powder under reflux for 8 hours, cooling and treating with water, whereupon the product separates as an oil which solidifies on cooling; (2) heating ethyl p-aminobenzoate with n-butyraldehyde for 1 hour on a steam bath to form the Schiff's base and reducing this by heating under reflux with alcohol, acetic acid and zinc powder.
