Abstract

A fuel-binder consists of a mixture of sodium silicate and silicic acid heated together preferably in an autoclave and stirred until the acid has dissolved or dispersed in the solution. The acid may be prepared as a gel by adding a mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric, to sodium silicate and about 15 per cent of the gel is mixed with 85 per cent of sodium silicate. One part of binder is mixed with about 6-10 parts of anthracite culm and 1/2 -3 parts of water and the moulded briquettes are baked for about 1/2 hour at a temperature rising from 250 DEG F. to 430 DEG F. The culm may first be treated with a waterproofing compound consisting of hide glue, Japan wax, soda soap, alum, denatured alcohol, formaldehyde and water, up to a gallon of compound being used per 100 lb. of culm.
