The invention comprises phenthiazines carrying as the sole substituent a lower alkyl group in the 1- or 2-position (Beilstein nomenclature). "Lower" alkyl means a group containing not more than 6, and preferably not more than 4 carbon atoms. These compounds are prepared by reacting with sulphur at elevated temperature diphenylamine substituted in the 3-position by the appropriate alkyl group, preferably by heating the mixture with iodine as catalyst to a temperature of not less than 140 DEG and preferably 150 DEG to 190 DEG C. The product is a mixture of 1- and 3-alkylphenthiazines which may be separated by fractional crystallization. The products are of use as starting materials in the process of Specification 714,217. In an example 3-methyl-diphenylamine and sulphur with iodine as catalyst are heated at 150 DEG C. The product is separated by fractional crystallization from benzene into 1- and 3-methyl-phenthiazines.
