Abstract

2-diphenyl acetyl-1,3-indandione is prepared by heating a mixture of diphenyl acetone and at least a 50% molar excess of a di-(lower alkyl) phthalate in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide and benzene to a temperature between 95 DEG and about 150 DEG C. while distilling benzene and the alcohol product from the reaction zone and recovering 2-diphenyl acetyl-1,3-indandione from the reaction mixture. The term "lower alkyl" denotes an alkyl group containing up to 8 carbon atoms. The removal of benzene and alcohol may be effected intermittently or continuously. The desired product may be isolated by removing the benzene, adding ethanol to dissolve tarry matter and acidifying the resulting suspension of the alkali metal salt of the diphenyl acetyl-1,3-indandione to liberate the product in its free state.
