Abstract
1-alkynlcycloalkanol formate of formula <FORM:0879004/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and Z is a bivalent unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon radical, which may be carbon atoms 13-16 of a cyclopentanopolyhydrophenanthrene ring system, are prepared by reacting the corresponding cycloalkanol with formyl fluoride in an inert organic solvent below -20 DEG C., preferably at -80 to -60 DEG C. 17a -Ethynyl-19-nor-testosterone formate, 1-ethynyl-cyclohexan-1-ol formate and 1-propynylcyclohexan- 1-ol formate are claimed per se. The cycloalkanols are preferably used in the form of their alkali metal alcoholates which may be obtained by the action of alkali metal amide in liquid ammonia. 17-a -Ethynyl-19-nor-testosterone formate is prepared both from 17-a -ethynyl-19-nor-testosterone-3-ethyl-enol-ether and from 17-a - ethynyl-19- nor-testosteroneethyleneketal, two isomeric 17-a -ethynyl-19-nor-testosterone-ethylene-ketal formates being isolated as intermediates in the latter case and hydrolysed with acetic acid to the product. Products may be purified by silicic acid chromatography. Specification 853,735 is referred to.
