Abstract

The invention comprises 3-methylthiophenthiazine and the preparation thereof by reacting 3-methylthiodiphenylamine with sulphur or a sulphur di-halide and separating the resulting structural isomers. The process may be combined with one wherein 3-methylthionitrobenzene is reduced to the amine, the product condensed with an ohalo-benzoic acid and the condensation product decarboxylated to give 3-methylthiodiphenylamine, and/or one wherein the 3-methylthiophenthiazine is condensed with a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0863547/IV (b)/1> wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom to produce a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0863547/IV (b)/2> Specifications 802,726 and 863,552 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 802,726.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 3-methylthiophenthiazine and an inert carrier.
