Abstract
Methyl 2,5-hexadienoate and methyl acrylate are prepared by passing acetylene and carbon monoxide into a mixture of methyl alcohol, nickel carbonyl, allyl acrylate and hydrochloric acid. Suitable reaction conditions are atmospheric pressure at 20 DEG to 60 DEG C., preferably 25 DEG to 40 DEG C., using molar ratios of C2H2 : CO of 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 1.2, allyl acrylate : methyl alcohol of 1 : 3 to 1 : 20, and nickel carbonyl: HCl of 1 : 1 to 1; 0.1 and a nickel carbonyl concentration of 3 to 20% by weight. The nickel carbonyl and hydrochloric acid are preferably employed as methanolic solutions and the reaction products may be isolated by distillation and phase separation.
