Abstract

Alkoxymethyl acetates are prepared by heating acetic anhydride with dialkoxy-methanes having at least 4 carbon atoms in the molecule under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of an acidic catalyst in a proportion of 0.1 to 1.0% by weight based on the total weight of the acetic anhydride and dialkoxymethane, and recovering the alkoxymethyl acetates by fractional distillation. Alkyl acetates are formed simultaneously. Specified dialkoxymethanes are diethoxy- and di-n-butoxymethane. Reaction is conveniently effected at the boiling-point of the mixture under reflux. The reaction mixture may be freed from the catalyst by flash distillation prior to the fractional distillation. It is preferred to use an excess of whichever reactant is most easily separated from the product by distillation.
