Abstract

<PICT:0877360/III/1> An ester-alcohol mixture is separated into its components by extractive distillation in a system wherein water is supplied as the extractive agent to the top of a distillation column at a temperature below that of the top of the column, suitably at atmospheric temperature, and no reflux condenser is provided. As shown, an ester-alcohol mixture is fed by pipe 3 to a distillation column 1, to the top of which water is fed by a pipe 4. The bottom 2 of the column is heated and the bottom liquid, including the alcoholic component of the mixture is discharged through a pipe 7. The ester vapour passes to a non-reflux condenser 5 and condensate is withdrawn through a pipe 6. Examples are given of the treatment of a mixture of vinyl acetate and methanol and of a mixture of methyl acetate and methanol. Other mixtures which may be treated are ethyl formate and methanol, ethyl acetate and methanol, n-propyl formate and ethanol, ethyl acetate and ethanol, and methyl propionate and ethanol.
