Abstract

A process of preparing anilides of the formula ** (See formula) ** where X is chlorine or the methyl group, characterized by (a) collecting a compound consisting of 3,4-dichloro aniline or 3-chloro-4-methylaniline, propionic acid and hydrogen chloride, providing from 1.3 to 1.7 moles of propionic acid per mole of said compound and the hydrogen chloride being present in the mixture in an amount of 1% to 4% by weight of said compound; (b) heating the resulting mixture to reaction temperature, whereby water is formed in the reaction mixture; (c) vaporizing propionic acid and water from the reaction mixture; (d) contacting the resulting vapors with an aliphatic hydrocarbon of 8 or 9 carbon atoms boiling between 100 and 120º C in a sufficient proportion to form an azeotrope of aliphatic hydrocarbon and water in said vapors; (e) fractionating the vapors containing said aliphatic hydrocarbon, said propionic acid and said water; (f) returning propionic acid from the fractionating vapors to the reaction mixture; (g) condensing said azeotrope; (h) separating and removing water from the resulting condensate; (i) returning the aliphatic hydrocarbon from said condensate to the fractionating vapors until water is no longer separated; (j) then dispelling the aliphatic hydrocarbon by distillation; (k) expelling propionic acid by distillation until it is substantially removed from the reaction mixture; and (l) collecting the resulting anilide in the form of a residue.
