Abstract

A mixture of an aliphatic hydrocarbon or aliphatic hydrocarbon halide and a dialkyl ether containing up to 6 carbon atoms is treated to remove ether therefrom by reacting the mixture at room temperature with a solid or liquid metal halide capable of binding the ether additively and separating the purified hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon halide from the reacted mixture. The mixtures to be treated may be brought into contact with the metal halide in the liquid or gaseous state. The separation of the purified material may be effected by distillation or filtration. The metal halide-ether addition compounds obtained as residue may be treated with water to recover the ether or be thermally decomposed to yield alkyl ethers. Examples describe the removal of ether from mixtures of methyl chloride and dimethyl ether using ZrCl4, SnCl4, AlCl3, ZnCl2 and TiCl4; the removal of dimethyl ether from its admixture with isobutane using AlCl3 and the removal of diethyl ether from its admixture with ethyl chloride using TiCl4. Ferric chloride is also specified.
