Abstract

Dimethyl sulphide is prepared by reacting the vapour of dimethyl ether with hydrogen sulphide at 150 DEG to 450 DEG C. in the presence of a sulphide of a metal of Group VI. The catalyst may be used on a carrier, e.g. a clay, or admixed with a solid diluent, e.g. aluminium or a silicon oxide. Alternatively, instead of the sulphide, there may be used an oxide or other compound of the metal convertible to the sulphide under the reaction conditions. Reaction may be effected under elevated pressure. Preferably excess of dimethyl ether is used and the reacted mixture condensed to recover the desired sulphide and the residual gases, comprising a little methyl mercaptan, recycled. An example is given using tungsten sulphide as catalyst. The dimethyl sulphide may be converted to the sulphoxide by oxidation.
