Abstract

Dailkyl sulphides are produced by reaction between a dialkyl ether or an alkanol and carbon disulphide or carbon oxysulphide at a temperature of 100 DEG C. to 700 DEG C., preferably 200 DEG C. to 500 DEG C. in the presence of active aluminium oxide as catalyst. In examples there are reacted (1) methanol and carbon disulphide to give dimethyl sulphide; (2) diethyl ether and carbon oxysulphide to give diethyl sulphide. Other reagents mentioned are ethanol, propanol, dimethyl ether and dipropyl ether.
