Abstract

Lauryl mercaptan is prepared by reacting lauryl alcohol with sulphur and hydrogen or a sulphur donor in the presence of a heavy metal sulphide as catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in the liquid phase under pressure at 220 DEG to 240 DEG C., using rhenium heptasulphide as catalyst. When the sulphur donor is used the reaction is advantageously carried out in the presence of hydrogen. Dodecyl sulphide may be formed as a by-product.
