Abstract

The hydrogenation of rubber and like highly polymerised unsaturated hydrocarbons is effected under pressure in presence of solvents and of catalysts containing heavy metals of the 6th group or oxides or sulphides thereof, with or without the addition of oxides or sulphides of other metals particularly 8th group metals, or of these metals themselves. Temperatures of 200--320 DEG C. and pressures of 50--180 atmospheres are referred to, but lower pressures such as 10 atmospheres may also be employed. Suitable catalysts are described in Specifications 333,511 and 336,583, [both in Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and several specific examples are mentioned.
